Who You Are Matters

  1. I was born in Palo Alto, California. I moved to Houston, Texas when I was a year old and then shortly after moved to Scottsdale, Arizona when I was 3.
  2. After graduating from the University of Southern California in May, I'll be moving to Melbourne, Australia to work in distribution at a Mortgage Fund in the Central Business District. I will continue working at the firm and climb up the ranks over time.
  3. I will get there by living with friends I met while studying at the University of Melbourne on exchange. I will climb up the ranks of the firm by demonstrating leadership, drive and initiative as well as surpassing the previous sales numbers of the firm.
  4. I'm like my father in the sense that I'm very career driven and hold myself to an extremely high standard. I'm like my mother in the sense that I'm personable and engaging with friends and strangers.
  5. I'm unlike my father in the aspect that I see problems with a gray area, not always in black and white. I'm unlike my mother because I'm forward-thinking and always planning.
  6. I have developed my own expectations for myself but only because I was raised in a supportive environment with parents that provided me the resources and moral support to thrive as a driven individual.
  7. Malala Yousafza has served as a role model to me for the last couple of years as she is extremely driven and strong in her convictions. I wrote one of my essays for the USC application about her and have followed her aspirational progress ever since.
  8. I feel a connection with the lion. I was doing a spiritual animal reading on a yoga retreat and pulled the card with the lion on it. I feel connected to the lion because of its strength and courage. I also identify with the traits of stubbornness and inability to see others viewpoints.
  9. Growing up in Arizona I had several encounters with cactus. At a young age I learned to fear them during outdoor activities such as biking or hiking. One time I fell into a prickly cactus at a young age and my mother had to use a tweezer to remove all the needles. Ever since then I learned to steer clear of cacti.

  1. Congratulations on getting the job in Melbourne! You are going to have a fantastic time there. I have always wanted to visit Australia and go to the Great Barrier Reef.

I also like the fact that you chose a lion... mostly because our high school mascot was a lion and I had to be the one being the mascot for all of our football and basketball games.

That is great news! I wish you all the best in Melbourne and I have no doubt that you will quickly climb the ranks of the firm, considering the high standards you set to yourself.
You seem like someone who knows what they want and will do anything you can to achieve your goals, and that's a rare quality. I am sure your determination will help you fulfill your desires.

  4. It's a shame you left Houston, I couldn't imagine a better place to grow up, having done so myself, but hey call me biased.

I envy your conviction and plan for your future. Not only do you know WHERE you want to end up, you have a PLAN for how to get there.

Good luck in Melbourne! With your confidence and abilities, you'll be unstoppable!

  5. Hi Elena,

I had a similar experience with a rose bush and tend to not 'stop and smell the roses' these days. Congrats on your opportunity in Melbourne! Your drive and determination are undeniable. I wish you the best.

  6. Hi Allegra,

When you said in class that you were moving to Melbourne, I was so interested to learn more. I find it amazing that you are following your dreams and moving around the world. I had the opportunity to visit Australia last March and absolutely loved it.

On my post, you commented that you are a dancer, and additionally, it’s so fun that you and I both connect with lions. I am also very in to yoga. It has been so fun reading about your journey. I am excited to learn more about you this semester.

  8. I think that having your own goals and being raised with the support to follow your own path is amazing. I have a lot of support in my family however there are certain expectation that I must meet by following the wishes of my parents. I often wish that I could have had more liberty in deciding which route to take but I’m also appreciative of the direction of my parents and look forward to when I can start fully making my own decisions in the way that you have.
